Learn more about what equipment is available.īrandeis PhD graduates with a focus on Electro-Acoustic music are now on the staff or directing studios at prominent universities including the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the University of North Texas, and the University of Arizona. In recent years, the studio has undergone many changes and upgrades and includes a variety of hardware and software including a Kyma Digital Audio Workstation, A Buchla, and Waves. ![]() Students, faculty, and visiting guest composers have access to facilities that fully integrate digital synthesis and recording equipment as well as vintage analog gear. Student assistants, both undergraduate and graduate, are actively involved in the studio and we maintain relationships with the music technology companies in the area. In addition, The studio is frequently utilized across the disciplines by students in Fine Arts, Theater (Sound Design), and Film Studies. We have ties to studios in England (Cambridge and City of London), France (Paris 8), Italy, and Sweden (Royal Music School). The studio also presents opportunities for study abroad for both graduate and advanced undergraduate students. This emphasis on music, rather than developing new technology, has been an integral part of the Composition Department's formula for success. What separates BEAMS from many other studios in the country is the emphasis on using the studio as a tool to create music. Preceding the studio at Brandeis, the first ever performance of Musique Concrete in the United States took place at the Brandeis Festival of the Arts in 1952, in which Merce Cunningham developed accompanying choreography. Since its inception the studio has been directed by Alvin Lucier, Harold Shapero, and, currently, Eric Chasalow. The first electronic music studio at Brandeis was established in 1961 by Gustav Ciamaga. In coordination with the Minister of Culture, the album was released in a limited series of cassettes showcasing modern Niger music. Mamman stepped into the studio of the National Radio with his organ, where it was transposed and overdubbed in two takes. His first and only album was recorded in 1978. Accompany this repertoire are a few compositions, such as Salamatu, the deeply personal love letter to an unrequited romance. Interpreting this rich and varied history of Niger's dance and song for the first time in contemporary musics, Mamman electrifies the nomadic drum of the tende, the polyphonic ballads of the Woddaabe, and the pastoral hymns of the Sahelian herders. Unsurprisingly, his source material is folkloric Nigerien music, and many of the compositions on this record are reproductions of ancient songs brought into the modern age. It is a remarkable manipulation of sound that uses the silence to invoke the emptiness - a metaphoric desert soundscape. Mamman's composes in technique that can only be called minimal, relying on the simplicity and space. The dreamy organ instrumentals drift by sans comment, yet are known to all. The instrumental background drones of radio broadcasts and instrumental segue ways of TV intermissions borrow heavily from his repertoire. ![]() A pioneer of early West African electronic music, for over 30 years his instrumentals have filled the airwaves. ![]() Mamman Sani Abdullaye is a legendary name amongst Niger's avant garde. ![]()
